Welcome to Planets for Beginners! If you missed it last week we talked about Mercury, and this week we are moving into the next planet in our solar system, Venus!
Venus the Planet
If you where told to pick out the brightest star in the sky, there is a high likelihood that you would point to Venus, our neighboring planet. Venus is the second planet from the Sun, and is a terrestrial planet like earth, but it is constantly surrounded by sulfuric acid clouds that are highly reflective. Because of this reflectiveness and the closeness to earth, Venus is super easy to spot. This planet is often referred to as the morning or evening star as you can see it right before sundown and right after sun up depending on the time of year.
Venus and the Gods
Quite obviously, Venus got its name from the Roman Goddess Venus, who is the Roman counterpart to the Greek Goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the Goddess of love, beauty, and sexuality. Venus is also highly associated with Goddesses from other cultures too, such as Isis, Ishtar, Inanna, and Astarte – all which have connections to womanhood.
Venus the planet is associated with much of what Venus the Goddess is associated with: love, beauty, art, and pleasure. Where Venus is within your birth chart can answer questions of who you attract, what you find beautiful, and how you express yourself creatively. Taurus and Libra are both ruled by the planet Venus, and with Libra you see this come out with their love for art and luxury, where Taurus is more reserved and comes out as their love for comfort.
Venus does not retrograde as Mercury (who we spoke about last week), but only once for about 43 days every 18 months. Because Venus is the planet of Love and Beauty, when Venus is in retrograde it is not a great time to make any big decisions regarding either of those, but rather reflect on if your values in these areas are aligning with your actions.
Upcoming Venus Retrograde:
- December 19, 2021 – January 29, 2022
