In astrology there are a few different ways to categorize the Zodiac signs. All of these categories are like building blocks that help build the way that each sign influences a person. The first “building block” that we are going to be focusing on is the zodiac elements (also known as Triplicities). There are four elements: fire, earth, water, and air. Each of these four elements host 3 of the 12 signs.
Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius
Fire signs are energetic and crave action. These signs have a creative spark and the want to act on their ideas. These signs are often also known for their “fiery” personalities. These signs tend to have outward confidence, but this is sometimes a façade.

Taurus, Capricorn, and Virgo
Earth signs are known for their stability and tend to be very grounded. While other people may have their heads in the clouds, earth signs are focused on the practicality of a plan or action. This stability and practicality can translate into either reliability or to being overly stubborn depending on the person and situation.

Pisces, Scorpio, and Cancer
Water signs are known for their intuition and connection to emotion, often letting their heart lead them rather than their head. These signs are greatly compassionate toward others as they have a deep grasp on emotion. Their connection to emotion can also negatively affect them as they are prone to over worrying and brooding on their feelings.

Libra, Aquarius, and Gemini
Air signs are often associated with intellect, as these signs are very reasonable. These signs are also great at communicating as Air signs tend to live in their heads and spend time thinking before they speak or act. This intellect transforms into curiosity very easily, and they are preceptive enough to quench their curiosity.

While each sign has specific signs that they are compatible with, general compatibility can be found from zodiac elements. Fire and Air tend to be compatible with each other. Just as air fuels fire and fire makes wind, these sets of signs feed off of each other. Earth and Water are also compatible with each other for similar reasons: water nurturing the earth and earth creating places to hold water. This does not mean that an air sign and a water sign will not get along, but the zodiac elements that suit each other best are fire and air / earth and water.
