Planets for Beginners: Jupiter

Welcome to Planets for Beginners! This post will be focusing on the planet of Jupiter. If you have missed it, I have already explored the meanings of Mercury, Venus, and Mars, and you can go back and catch up if you want to! Okay, lets jump in!

Jupiter the Planet

Jupiter is the largest planet within our solar system and is orbited by 63 known moons. This planet is fifth from the sun, and takes nearly 12 years to rotate around it. It’s days however are quick, about 10 hours each. This planet has a partially rocky core that is surrounded by gasses and is known for its red spot that is a large and constant storm within its atmosphere.

Jupiter and the Gods

This planet is often called the king of planets, due to who it is named after – Jupiter, the roman king of Gods. Zeus is the Greek counterpart to this god. This connects Jupiter with the idea of law making and order as well as faith and wisdom. Other gods that are related to this planet are Marduk (Babylonian), Horus (Egyptian), and Thor (Norse).

Astrological Meaning

Jupiter is the ruler of the zodiac sign Sagittarius and the co-ruler of Pisces (with Neptune). This sign is highly connected to fortune and abundance. Where this planet falls within your chart can influence how you connect with others as well as how you interact with luck within your lifetime.

In Retrograde

When this planet goes retrograde, laws and normal orders of doing things will be called into question. This questioning will stand true with things that you normally have faith in and this curiosity can lead to a deeper connection with your faith.

Upcoming Jupiter Retrograde:

  • July 28, 2022 to November 23, 2022
  • September 4, 2023 to December 30, 2023

Jupiter and Tarot

As the major leader and “king of planets” Jupiter can be related back heavily to the Emperor card, but also to the Magician card as it represents wisdom.

Other Cards that are associated with Jupiter are:

  • Wheel of Fortune
  • King of Pentacles
  • Ten of Cups
